With more than 27,000 tickets sold for its Sept. 17 match at Snapdragon Stadium, its new home, San Diego Wave Futbol Club stands to eclipse the National Women’s Soccer League’s single-game attendance record, according to the team.
“We are so proud to be a part of such a ive community,” said Wave President Jill Ellis, “and we cannot wait to sell the whole place out.”
A Portland crowd of 25,218 set the current record in 2019; the new San Diego venue, recently completed in Mission Valley, can seat 33,000 fans and accommodate 2,000 spectators in standing room-only areas. The projected Saturday night crowd Sept. 17 would more than quadruple turnouts for Wave matches at the University of San Diego’s Torero Stadium, capacity 6,100.
Wave star Alex Morgan called the ticket sales a “testament to two things: women’s soccer in the U.S., and the San Diego Wave and what we’re building here.”
The 7 p.m. contest pairs the Wave (8-5-4) against fellow expansion team Angel City (6-5-4) of Los Angeles. Concluding their 22-game season, the Wave will return to Mission Valley for a Friday night match, Sept. 30. Tied for second place, the Wave seek one of six playoff berths in the 12-team league, which is in its 10th season.
