The historic Alvarado House is making its 35th appearance this year at the San Diego County Fair. Moved from its original location at 144 10th Street, it is no longer a home with residents but has evolved into a valued teaching instrument for fair visitors. It has become our annual opportunity to look back at life in 19th century Del Mar to experience:· An example of early craftsman architecture· How an 1885 bedroom was furnished. What is a chamber pot?· A look at an 1885 kitchen. No electricity. No running water. How to boil water?· Photos of famous actors, politicians, and sport figures that came along in the mid-20th century.· Photos of beauty contests and events. Fashions have changed. Swimsuits have shrunk.
In experiencing the living realities of early Del Mar, visitors to the Alvarado House get a close look at what life was like in 1885 and can better understand what has changed over the last 140 years. Who we were set the stage for who we have become. Today, what would founder Jacob Taylor think about current concerns such as moving the railroad tracks, burying electrical lines, not to mention serving alcohol in restaurants (his Del Mar was dry)?
Thanks to those who have saved this precious teaching asset. Over 7,000 visitors toured the Alvarado House last summer.
