Re “Federal appeals court rules San Diego’s controversial yoga ban unconstitutional” (June 4): Have city leaders truly gone mad? This ban was ridiculous from the start — what could be more San Diego than yoga on the beach? Yet the city, which claims it is broke, spent money litigating this and even now is considering appealing this court’s common-sense ruling. How ing that money instead to feed some homeless people or fix the leaky Convention Center?

I read with chagrin the federal appeals court ruling to allow private, for-profit yoga classes on public beaches. The ruling said the city failed to show that the (for-profit) yoga lessons threaten public enjoyment of shoreline parks. Threaten, no, but they do preclude public use of public facilities.
I fear the court has opened the door for commercial ventures on public lands in a contorted decision that only a commercial yoga instructor could love.
