Explosions likely caused by youths with fireworks, police say

Reports of explosions in La Jolla last week likely were the result of youths playing with fireworks, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Calls came in around 10 p.m. June 4 in the area of Pearl, Cuvier and Nautilus streets and La Jolla Boulevard, said SDPD Lt. Bryan Brecht.

“The callers kept reporting juveniles in the area on bikes. My guess is they got hold of some fireworks and were riding around lighting them off,” Brecht said. “Officers responded to the area, but [the youths] were not around upon arrival.”

Police have no suspects, but anyone with information about the incident can call SDPD’s Northern Division at 858-552-1700.

Bicyclist hospitalized

A bicyclist suffered what is believed to be a heart attack while riding down Via Capri in La Jolla last week.

According to social media posts and the San Diego Police Department, the rider was seen on the ground being cared for by paramedics June 1.

Police Lt. Bryan Brecht said “there was no collision” and that it was a medical incident. The cyclist was taken to a hospital. No further information was available.
