A 20-year-old motorcycle rider died Wednesday night after he collided with a vehicle in Escondido, police said.

The rider was heading south on Centre City Parkway approaching Nutmeg Street shortly after 7:35 p.m. when a 67-year-old driver in a Hyundai Ioniq began to make a left-hand turn from Nutmeg to northbound Centre City Parkway. The vehicles collided, and the motorcyclist was thrown from his bike, Escondido acting police Capt. Craig Miller said.

The rider, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to a hospital, where he died. He was an Escondido resident. His name has not been released pending notification of family .

The driver, who was the one who reported the collision, remained at the scene and talked with police, Miller said.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing. There were no witnesses, and there are no surveillance cameras in the area, Miller said. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.

“We will have to do a speed analysis and look at the car data and things like that to figure out what the exact cause was, whether it was a violation of right of way or speed, or a combination of both,” he said.
