The Ocean Beach Kite Festival took flight for the 78th time May 17 at Robb Field, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of fliers despite an overcast sky.

The festival, presented by the Kiwanis Club of Ocean Beach with assistance from the Ocean Beach Woman’s Club, offered visitors the chance to make and decorate their own kites with free materials and instructions and win prizes for best-decorated kites.

There also were kite games such as Chase the Tail, Candy Drop and Races, plus a carnival, an artisan fair, community booths and food trucks.

Mike Sterling, who traveled from Portland, Ore., to participate in the festival, was happy to make the trip.

“If organizations like this didn’t hold kite festivals, kite flying will die,” he said. “Kite flying is for all ages.”
