Shoppers showed up early to the Ramona Garden Club’s spring Plant and Craft Sale to find bargains and get the best selection.

Garden Club Co-President Jane Vidal said sales were brisk throughout the day Saturday at Ramona Oaks Park in San Diego Country Estates. Sales at the April 30 presale were also productive, Vidal said.

“People were lined up this morning and ready to buy stuff,” she said the morning of the Plant and Craft Sale, which happened to be her 80th birthday. “We need to sell while the fires are hot.”

Proceeds from the sales will go toward student scholarships and grant programs. So far this year, the club has budgeted $5,500 for the scholarships, Vidal said.

Plant Sale Co-Chair Carol Wilson said she and Co-Chair Debbie Gomez were “delighted” with the turnout.

“We had a beautiful day with the weather and we escaped the rain,” Wilson said.

Shoppers included a trio of women who have been friends since elementary school.

“We grew up together in La Mesa as Girl Scouts,” Deniene Rivenburg said while shopping with her friends, Elizabeth Bowling and Valerie Boggan. “We came here for our reunion. We all love plants and they’re such a beautiful reflection of hope and life.”

Robin Moodley, another shopper from Ohio who was visiting her sister-in-law in Ramona, bought an elephant cactus for her relative because she collects elephants.

“I think it’s amazing,” Moodley said of the event. “The prices are incredible and the talent is incredible all the way around.”

Vendors at the event included Bob and Cathy Cochran of Warner Springs, who sold handcrafted toys and kitchen items along with wine bottle holders.

“This is a self-sustaining hobby, not a business,” Bob Cochran said “I enjoy it when the kids buy the toys. It makes me happy.”

The Ramona Garden Club, which has nearly 100 , holds the Plant and Craft Sale each May and October. The club will be refreshing its board of directors on July 1 with a new president, Ramona resident Robert Holton.

The club meets the second Wednesday each month at Mountain View Community Church, 1191 Meadowlark Way in Ramona. Check-in and potluck starts at 11:30 a.m. and meetings start at noon. No meetings are held in July or August. For more information, visit the website, RamonaGardenClub.com.
