Padres minors: Jake Cronenworth homers for El Paso, Humberto Cruz debuts in Arizona

Padres second baseman will rehab again with El Paso on Wednesday as he aims for Friday return from injured list

Jake Cronenworth is looking healthier by the day.

He homered in his first rehab game with Triple-A El Paso, a 9-7 win on Tuesday over visiting Round Rock.

Cronenworth went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, three walks and three runs scored while playing second base.

Cronenworth is expected to play with El Paso again on Wednesday as he looks to the big-league club in Denver on Friday. He already played two rehab games last week in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League.

Cronenworth has been out since exiting a game on April 8 with a nondisplaced rib fracture.

Shortstop Eguy Rosario (.456 OPS) hit his first homer of the season, his 49th as a Chihuahua to set a franchise record.

Right-hander David Morgan (0.00 ERA) struck out two in a scoreless inning in his El Paso debut and right-hander Reiss Knehr (3.00 ERA) struck out three in the ninth for his seventh save.

El Paso is 16-18.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (15-13)

Missions 9, Frisco 2: RHP Braden Nett (1-3, 5.04 ERA) struck out seven and allowed two runs — one earned — on five hits and a walk in 5⅓ innings in the win. RHP Eduarniel Nuñez (4.63 ERA) threw two scoreless innings. LF Moises Gomez (.868 OPS) drove in two runs on three this, including a double. 3B Devin Ortiz (.861 OPS) had three hits and 1B Romeo Sanabria (.829 OPS) went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

 

HIGH SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (16-12)

TinCaps 14, Cubs 9: DH Sean Barnett (1.108 OPS), CF Nerwilian Cedeno (.643 OPS) and LF Jack Costello (.644 OPS) all drove in three runs. Cedeno and Costello had three hits. SS Leo De Vries (.966 OPS) went 1-for-5 with two RBIs, a walk and two runs scored. RHP Ian Koenig (1-0, 5.74 ERA) struck out six and allowed two runs in five innings in the win.

 

LOW SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (12-16)

Storm 4, San Jose 3: LHP Kash Mayfield (5.12 ERA) struck out seven and allowed three runs on six hits and a walk in five innings in the start. RHP Will Varmette (1-0, 8.10 ERA) turned in four perfect innings in relief for the win. CF Kasen Wells (.844 OPS) drove in two runs on two hits, including a double. 3B Zach Evans (.847 OPS) went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. 2B Ryan Jackson (.917 OPS) and LF Chase Valentine (.429 OPS) both had doubles.

 

ROOKIE ACL PADRES (1-2)

Padres 3, Rangers 0 (7): RHP Humberto Cruz struck out two in a scoreless inning in the start in his 2025 debut. Cruz is ranked No. 4 in the system by MLB.com. RHP Abraham Parra (0.00 ERA) struck out four over five scoreless innings in relief in the win. DH Kale Fountain (1.339 OPS) went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
