A 12-year-old girl was killed after being struck by a car Friday night while crossing the street in Encinitas, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said.
The incident, which took place at 6:51 p.m. near Encinitas Boulevard and Village Square Drive, happened after a Nissan Xterra traveling west collided with a Ford Fusion traveling south. The Xterra then hit the girl, who has not been identified by authorities.
Drivers of both cars involved in the crash remained at the scene, and drug or alcohol use is not suspected, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by North Coastal Station Traffic Investigators and the Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team. The Sheriff’s Office is asking witnesses to call (858) 565-5200.
