The Coastal Communities Concert Band (CCCB), an award-winning symphonic band of more than 75 musicians from throughout San Diego County, will be ed by 26 high school students in its Salute to Young Musicians Concert on Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at the San Dieguito Academy Gymnasium, 800 Santa Fe Drive in Encinitas. Students from Canyon Crest Academy, La Costa Canyon High School, San Dieguito Academy and Torrey Pines High School are scheduled to perform with the band.

For more than 20 years, the band has invited San Dieguito District students to rehearse and perform in this concert and has awarded over $44,000 in scholarships. Participating students may audition for up to four $750 scholarships and the $1,500 Caneva Scholarship, named in memory of long-time CCCB Director Don Caneva. The 2025 scholarship winners will be announced at the concert.
2024 Caneva Scholarship winner Caleb Liu returns to perform the first movement of Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto. Liu is a graduate of Canyon Crest Academy and is currently a student at San Diego Mesa College and planning to pursue a career in architecture.
The concert program includes other exciting music, including selections by Gershwin and Sousa, as well as music from the movies, Hook and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The Coastal Communities Concert Band is under the direction of guest conductor Bruce Mansfield, D.M.A. Mansfield is an associate professor of music and director of bands at Point Loma Nazarene University, having ed the PLNU faculty after a 22-year career as a U.S. Navy musician. He has also directed bands at Anne Arundel Community College and Poulsbo Community Orchestra.
