A man was fatally shot in El Cajon Thursday morning in an incident that prompted a precautionary lockdown of a nearby high school, police said.

The shooting was reported just before 10:15 a.m. on North First Street, just north of Main Street. Jaquis Holiday, 26, was found suffering from gunshot wounds and transported to a hospital, where he died, El Cajon police Lt. Nick Sprecco said in a statement.

Several hours later, around 4:30 p.m., the suspect in the killing, 47-year-old Terrell Gibbs, ed police and agreed to surrender, Sprecco said. Gibbs was arrested in connection with the homicide.

Investigators say the victim and suspect knew each other and described the crime as an “isolated incident.”

El Cajon Valley High School, located west of First Street, was temporarily placed on lockdown. At the same time as the lockdown, an “unrelated medical emergency” arose at the school to which medics responded, Sprecco said. Two nearby elementary schools also secured their campuses due to the proximity of the incident.
