The buds and blooms springing to life are a sign the Ramona Garden Club’s Plant and Craft Sale is just around the corner.
The spring event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at Ramona Oaks Park, 25341 Pappas Road in San Diego Country Estates. The event is held twice each year, once in spring and again in the fall.
Garden Club Co-President Jane Vidal said the Plant and Craft Sale is held in conjunction with a garden tour every other year. The tour offers the public an opportunity to visit select gardens in Ramona, she said.
This year’s sale is a fundraiser for the club’s grants and scholarship programs, Vidal said. So far this year, the club has budgeted $5,500 for student scholarships, she said. The club reports that roughly $50,000 in scholarships have been provided to students over more than 20 years.

The club is expecting a good turnout of vendors and visitors, she said.
“There will be loads of plants and lots of crafts,” she said. “We will have all kinds of wonderful things for sale.”
Plant Sale Co-Chair Debbie Gomez said a large variety of plants for the yard and house will be for sale. Varieties will include succulents, cactus, protea, epiphyllum, bulbs, cuttings and native plants.

Accessories that are expected to be sold include garden crafts, garden art, gently used garden decor and tools.
“There will be more variety this year,” Gomez said. “In the past we sold a lot of succulents, but this year there will be a good variety of plants. Although they get sold quickly. People know to get there right away.”
About half the plants for sale were grown by Garden Club and the other half were donated by people moving out of the state or country, Gomez said. Decorative ceramic pots were also donated so some of the plants will be sold in those instead of plastic containers, she said.
“We have probably 70 small ceramic pots that are small but cute, and also some larger ones,” she said.
Because of an abundance of plants, Gomez said the Garden Club will host a presale event three days before the main plant sale. The presale is set for 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 30 in Gomez’s front yard at 16773 Georgios Way in San Diego Country Estates.
Plants leftover after the main plant sale will also be sold in a community garage sale being held at different locations in Ramona. The after-sale will be held Saturday, May 17 at a time and location to be determined.
“The plants will be priced less than what they are priced in the nurseries,” Gomez said, adding that the twice per year Plant and Craft Sales are the club’s biggest fundraisers.
