CLASSES

CLOSED – Friday, April 25 – The Senior Center will be closed for our 10th Annual Healthy Aging Conference, which will be held off-site.

Readers and Writers Workshop

Tuesday, April 29, 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Elizabeth St. John, critically acclaimed best-selling local author, and discuss the writer’s journey from inspiration to perspiration, discover insider techniques and tricks, and practice basic writing crafts from three-act drama to character arcs. All readers and writers are welcome. This class meets on the last Tuesday of each month.

Line Dancing

Tuesday, May 6, from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. In this fun, 60-minute class, you will learn basic line dance steps and choreography with Heather who has over four decades of dance experience with a B.A. in modern dance choreography from UCLA. She is also a Pilates Master with 30 years’ experience. There is a $20 fee paid to the instructor.

Drawing for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Approach

Wednesday, May 7, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. This class is perfect for adults with little to no drawing experience. We’ll start with a pastel sunset warm-up, then use a step-by-step approach to draw local birds. Handouts, instructor samples, and personal guidance make learning easy and fun. No experience needed—just a willingness to explore!

Fawn Norrup is an accomplished art teacher and exhibiting artist specializing in multi-media techniques with a ion for guiding beginners. She creates a ive and engaging learning environment where students can develop their artistic skills with confidence. There is a $25 fee, paid to the instructor and covers all supplies.

Book Club with the Rancho Santa Fe Librarians

Wednesday, May 28, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.  us for a lively discussion at the Senior Center of “The Friend” by Sigrid Nunez. After unexpectedly losing her lifelong best friend and mentor, a woman struggles with her grief while caring for the traumatized Great Dane he left behind, who is also mourning its master. Pick up your copy of the book at the Rancho Santa Fe Library or a copy using your Libby app.

ONGOING CLASSES

Healthy Longevity Class

Monday (weekly) from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.  Dr. Abraham Kim from Synaptic Integrated Medicine to explore health longevity practices incorporating qi gong, acupressure, and tai chi movements. This class will focus on techniques to enhance balance, coordination, energy, and long term neurological health and resilience. Dr. Abraham will share insights from his expertise in integrated medicine in neurology and longevity practices, offering valuable tips on preventing aging health conditions and optimizing overall well-being. A $10 courtesy fee is requested per session per person.

Open Play Mah Jongg

Monday (weekly) from 10 a.m. – noon. Enjoy a friendly game of beginner American Mahjongg, a tile-based game that is enjoyed by individuals throughout the world! A basic understanding of the tiles and rules is required.

Texas Hold’em Poker Lessons for Beginners

Monday (weekly) from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.  This beginner’s class is designed to teach the fundamentals of Texas Hold’em in a fun and engaging environment. Chips and cards are provided, and ongoing open poker play will be available for beginners. This class is ideal for absolute beginners with no prior poker experience. This class is full, please call 858-756-3041 to be added to the waitlist.

Calling All Chess Players!

Tuesday (weekly) – 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Come and enjoy a friendly game of chess at the Senior Center and get a workout for your brain! Research has found evidence that playing chess may result in improved brain function, memory, cognitive abilities, and strategic thinking. Each Tuesday, enjoy a friendly game of chess at the RSF Senior Center. All levels of players are welcome. Free instruction is provided for beginners. Tables and playing pieces are furnished.

Self-Comion for Stress Reduction with Ann Nye, Ph.D.

Thursday (weekly) from 9:30-9:55 a.m. Lower stress through guided and silent meditation using the works of Jack Kornfield and Pema Chodron. Enjoy a 5-minute guided meditation followed by 20 minutes of silent meditation. The last meditation class is on May 29. Ann will return in the fall.

Chair Yoga

Thursday (weekly) 10 a.m.-11 a.m.  Peggie Moore, a certified yoga instructor, Reiki Master, and BEWELL Yoga for Cancer teacher, offers a weekly outdoor, in-person chair yoga class. This class will teach you techniques to improve core strength and balance, increase flexibility, and reduce stress. There is a $10 per person fee paid to the instructor. The first class is free.

Conversational Spanish

Friday (weekly) – Beginner/Intermediate Class 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. and Intermediate Class 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.  Jeannette Caruth learned Spanish solely through conversation and invites you to become more familiar with the language. Each class is a one- hour adventure of hearing and speaking another language. All levels are welcome. There is a $10 fee per class paid to the instructor.

Special Announcement: After seven wonderful years of guiding us with wisdom and serenity, our meditation instructor Lizzy Weiss will be leading her final online class on Sunday, April 27, at 9 a.m. Please her for this final session to honor her journey and the impact she has made on our community. UCSD is seeking participants for The Women’s Memory Study. You must be female, age 65 or older, and no formal diagnosis of dementia. Results from this study could help develop specialized therapies for both men and women at risk for Alzheimer’s. With study completion, participants will receive a $300 Visa Gift Card.
