
Two of the area’s nationally-ranked golf teams had big weeks.
San Diego State’s 15th-ranked men’s golf team and No. 1 player Justin Hastings claimed the titles at the Lamkin Invitational cohosted by the Aztecs and the University of San Diego last week at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista.
The Aztecs came with a stroke of the tournament team record to win the team title by 16 strokes. Colorado and USD tied for second. Latin American Amateur champion Hastings finished the three-round event with back-to-back 66s for a tournament record, 16-under 200. Aztec Harry Takis tied for second at 204 and Shea Lague (Steele Canyon High School) was sixth.
Hastings was named the Mountain West Golfer of the Week for the third time this season while Takis was the Freshman of the Week for the second time. San Diego State is seeking a fourth straight Mountain West title.
San Diego State’s women’s golf team finished ninth in the Yale Invitational West at La Quinta.
Elsewhere:
• The Cal State San Marcos women’s golf team, which is ranked sixth nationally in NCAA Division II, won the Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge Golf Club in San Marcos for the second straight year.
Regan Barton and Diana Delgado tied for first with two-over 218s with Barton winning the individual title in a two-hole playoff. Barton and Delgado were named co-California Collegiate Athletic Association Female Golfers of the Week.
San Marcos’ men won the Tim Tierney Pioneer shootout in Alameda. Greg Mo was the individual champion with a nine-under 207. Brother Nick Mo tied for 13th.
• San Diego State’s Jenna Fee Feyerabend placed 10th in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Virginia Beach, Va., with a season-best 4,202 points. Teammate Shaquena Foote finished 14th in the 400 meters in 52.58 seconds.
• Cal State San Marcos junior Rasha Badrani (San Pasqual High School) won the 400 meters at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis with her time of 52.92 seconds matching the school record.
• SDSU’s Valentina Lopez qualified for the NCAA Diving Championships with a sixth-place finish in the Zone E 3-meter springboard competition at Federal Way, Wash.
• UC San Diego (11-8) is the only local NCAA Division I baseball team with a winning record. San Diego State is 6-14 and USD is 3-16.
•Point Loma Nazarene (16-8) is ranked 15th in the nation in the NCAA Division II baseball rankings. The Sea Lions are 12-6 in PacWest Conference play after splitting a doubleheader with Concordia.
• San Diego State’s softball team is 17-10. Lala Macario (Bonita Vista High School) leads the Aztecs with a .465 batting average; catcher Cali Decker is hitting .446 with a team-high four home runs and 22 RBIs. She was named the Mountain West Player of the Week Monday.
• Cal State San Marcos (20-5) is ranked seventh in the nation in NCAA Division II softball.Pitchers Jayline Sloss (1.63 ERA) and Dahlia Fink (2.63) have seven wins apiece.
• Palomar College continues to lead both the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference baseball and softball standings. The Comets’ baseball team is ranked 15th in California with a 14-7 overall record and a 6-1 mark in PCAC play. Freshman infielder Justin Tucker (Grossmont High School) leads Palomar with a .343 batting average. Grossmont College (12-6 overall) and Mesa (13-7) are tied for second with 4-2 PCAC marks.
• The Palomar College softball team (14-2) has won 10 straight and is 3-0 in PCAC play. Breana Lutz (Ramona High) is hitting .676 with six homers, 26 RBIs and a 2.015 OPS. Maddie Bedolla (Tri-City Christian) is 8-0 with a 1.40 ERA.
• San Diego State’s 20th-ranked women’s water polo team (12-9) lost to No. 17 Indiana 14-7 Sunday.
• Ed Carberry was inducted into the California Community College Football Coaches Hall of Fame March 8 in Visalia. Carberry is the winningest coach in Southwestern College history (88-59) and was also 19-12 in three seasons at San Jacinto College following a 101-74-2 career at Monte Vista High School. His 45-year coaching career ended in 2021. Former Jaguars quarterback Luis Perez was also inducted into the CCC Football Hall of Fame.
