The Shockwave #3848 Robotics Team at The Grauer School, an independent school in Encinitas, won the Design Award, which recognized the outstanding mechanical design of their robot, and qualified for the San Diego Regional FIRST Tech Challenge competition, according to a news release.
At the league championships, the team won five of their six matches and moved into the playoffs as part of the second rank alliance in the Euclid League. In the playoff elimination tournament, the team won second place, qualifying them for the San Diego Regional competition, which is being held March 20-23 at UC San Diego LionTree Arena.
“The team worked hard to finalize and update their autonomous program, which controls the robot without driver input, and with the adjustments in place, the robot performed extremely well,” said Morgan Brown, Shockwave coach, in the news release.

The Shockwave #3848 Robotics Team has been one of The Grauer School’s flagship STEM programs for the past 12 years, and the team has attended the FTC World Championship competition five times in their impressive history. In addition to attending competitions, the team promotes STEM in the community through outreach events to local elementary and middle schools.
“We are proud to provide innovative STEM programs for our students. The continued success of our robotics team and all of our STEM programs is due to the innovation of our student body combined with the knowledge shared by their mentors and the gracious of their sponsor, the Loewy Linz Foundation,” said Dana Abplanalp-Diggs, M.Ed., Head of School for The Grauer School, in the news release. “The benefits of participating in STEM programs cannot be overstated. Every innovative discovery, every practical problem solved and every enthusiastic learner is testament to the effectiveness of the benefits. Our STEM education programs are enhanced by tight-knit classroom environments and individual attention to each student’s gifts, talents and skills.”
