Erin Weir, a senior at The Grauer School, an independent school in Encinitas, has been named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, according to a news release.
“Becoming a National Merit Scholar is an outstanding honor as each student considered scored in the top one percentile of test takers nationwide. Each year, millions of students from across the nation take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, and out of the less than 16,000 finalists only about half are selected for a National Merit Scholarship,” said Dana Abplanalp-Diggs, M.Ed., Head of School for The Grauer School, in the news release. “Achieving this recognition requires near-perfect test results and is a testament to Erin’s academic rigor and commitment to excellence.”
Fully involved at The Grauer School, Weir has been a leader in many student-run clubs, including the Artificial Intelligence Club, Young Leaders in Healthcare Club and Philosophy Club. In addition to competing on the Science Olympiad team and in Mathematical Modeling contests, she has performed in many of the school’s high school theatrical productions and Theatre Cafe Night events, and was part of the school’s archery and volleyball teams.
After entering the Center for Martial Arts at four years old, she became the youngest black belt at the Center for Martial Arts in 2017. She is now a Sahm Dan in the Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan (third degree black belt) and worked as assistant instructor at the Center for Martial Arts.
Giving back through community service is a priority for her and her family, so she implemented fundraising events for UNICEF and raised hundreds of dollars for the charity over her time at The Grauer School, while logging more than 50 community service hours each year.
“The Grauer School strives to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. In our balanced, holistic program, students develop the courage and confidence to nurture their unique interests. All students have access to everything Grauer has to offer, from arts to athletics, STEAM, leadership, community service, world languages, cultural immersion and more,” said Alicia Tembi, principal of The Grauer School, in the news release. “Erin is an outstanding student who has achieved great things while pursuing her personal ions in academics, theatre, sports, martial arts, community service and more.”
