Report of suspicious package in Encinitas deemed to be unfounded

Coaster train service has resumed at the station. It was halted for more than an hour as officials checked out the suspicious device

UPDATED:

Sheriff’s officials said a report of a suspicious package at the Encinitas transit center early Thursday turned out to be unfounded. The incident prompted officials to halt Coaster train service at the station for more than an hour.

The call came in around 8:45 a.m., and deputies were dispatched to the scene, sheriff’s Lt. Colin Hebeler said. After deputies checked out the call, a bomb-sniffing dog and of the bomb-arson unit were sent to the location.

Around 10 a.m., they determined the package did not present a danger, and normal operations at the transit center on East D Street could resume, Hebeler said.

The discovery had prompted the North County Transit District to close the station and shut down Coaster service at the location, the agency posted on the social media app X shortly after 9 a.m.

By 10:15 a.m., train service to the Encinitas station had resumed, the agency said in a post on X. NCTD said the incident will delay train service by around 40 minutes.

During the closure, the transit district said it provided bus service to Coaster riders.
