Kelly Lasho, a Stone Ranch Elementary fifth-grade teacher, has received a $1,000 Anne Gillespie Innovative Grant to help her create the Blazer Broadcast.

The grant was recently presented to her by the Eta Chi chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. The money will a broadcasting club where students will be involved on camera and behind the camera as of its editing and creative teams.

Lasho said Blazer Broadcast “is the working title, which may get changed by the kids because I want them to have a voice. My desired outcome is for this to become a highly desired club to strive to as a fifth-grader. I am hoping for this broadcast to be something the entire school looks forward to seeing every Monday morning.”

She envisions the club will build community at the 4S Ranch campus as its interview students, staff and faculty. Lasho said she also wants to incorporate sign language in the club’s work.

“After COVID, I have witnessed the need to rebuild relationships and encourage tolerance and kindness,” Lasho said.

The Anne Gillespie Innovative Learning Grant is given by Eta Chi in honor of Gillespie, who taught in Poway Unified School District for 32 years. She was known for deg and presenting “innovative lessons to engage her students and enhance their learning,” according to the organization’s website.

Delta Kappa Gamma’s Eta Chi chapter has around 50 current and retired PUSD educators. During the past six years the chapter, along with related DKG resources, has awarded over $17,000 in grants, scholarships and awards to Poway Unified educators. For more details, visit dkg-etachi.weebly.com.
