Historic Downtown Encinitas Walking Tour

The Encinitas Historical Society offers this fun educational tour on the third Saturday of every month with more varied walking paths. The tours start at the 1883 One-Room Schoolhouse, located at 390 West F Street, Encinitas. There is plenty of free parking available. On March 15, the tour will cover the south end of the Coast Highway. The Encinitas Historical Society has implemented a suggested donation of $10 per person. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at local Games Day event

Solana Beach Community Connections (SBCC) along with the City of Solana Beach Parks and Recreation and Let’s Play a Game Foundation invites all to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at their monthly Games Day on Thursday, March 13 from noon to 2 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The 2025 Blue Water Film Festival (BWFF) presented by the Blue Water Institute recently announced its honorees and film lineup for its 6th Annual Blue Water Film Festival, taking place March 20-23 in celebration of United Nations World Water Day. Batiquitos Lagoon nature walk: “Nests: Not Just for the Birds”

Batiquitos Lagoon will hold a nature walk on March 15 at 10 a.m. titled “Nests: Not Just for the Birds.” Ant nests can be huge underground labyrinths, and raccoons are experts at disguising their nests in trees, which are just a couple of examples. BLF docents to learn about the feathered, furred and chitin-covered neighbors vying for a desirable view of Batiquitos Lagoon.This free, family and easy walk is good for all ages but may take one-and-a-half hours round trip on the trail. Sons of Cream to perform at Belly Up

The U.K. band Sons of Cream will perform in Solana Beach at the Belly Up on March 12 at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.).Two of the of the band, Malcom Bruce and Kofi Baker, are sons of two of the original of the legendary Cream — Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. The third member of this highly talented trio is guitarist Rob Johnson, who is a grandnephew of Ginger. All three sing as well. The band’s set includes one classic Cream song after another along with two Blind Faith songs. They are not a tribute band, although they pay tribute to Cream’s music. Rotary Creates Magic fundraiser at arts center

The 39th annual Rotary Creates Magic fundraiser is at 7 p.m. March 8 at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center on the Carlsbad High School campus, 3557 Monroe St. The show will feature a lineup of award-winning magicians who have performed around the world and appeared on television shows such as “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” and “Masters of Illusion.” The event, founded and hosted by magician Paul Dwork, The Magic of Merlin, has raised more than $1 million for various charities. Along with Dwork, who blends mystery and storytelling, the magicians performing include Ron Saylor, Jonathan Molo and Ice McDonald. The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation will host a presentation on “The Amazing Gray Whale Migration” at 10 a.m. March 8. The talk will be led by Jane Barger, naturalist at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Barger will discuss the Eastern North Pacific gray whale, including its population, migration, calving, feeding, physical characteristics and other interesting facts. Golf tournament benefits Shelter to Soldier

Shelter to Soldier will host its sixth annual “Saving Lives, One Swing at a Time” golf tournament April 25 at Singing Hills Golf Resort at Sycuan, 3007 Dehesa Road. The event, sponsored partly by Sycuan Casino Resort, s the nonprofit’s mission of adopting dogs from local shelters and training them as service dogs for post-9/11 veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma, or other service-related injuries. ‘Music, the Brain, and Spycraft’ topic of talk

A presentation on “Music, the Brain, and Spycraft” will be hosted by Del Mar-Leucadia and Carlsbad-Oceanside-Vista branches of the American Association of University Women from 10 a.m. to noon March 15 at Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. Symphony performs Mid-Century Gems

The North Coast Symphony Orchestra will give a concert of Mid-Century Gems at 2:30 p.m. March 8 at the San Dieguito United Methodist Church, 170 Calle Magdelena. The program of orchestral music features Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto performed by Aaron McCalla, principal tubist with the San Diego Symphony. The concert also includes Sergei Prokoviev’s Symphony No. 7 and Malcolm Arnold’s “English Dances.” The orchestra was founded in 1947 and will be conducted by Jordan Kuspa. ‘Move-a-thon’ registration opens

Registration begins March 3 for this year’s “Move For Their Thoughts” nationwide 35-day “move-a-thon” from April 27 to May 31. The event raises awareness about the challenges facing caregivers of all ages who are responsible for caring for loved ones with dementia. The event started during the COVID-19 2020 lockdown with 20 participants and has grown into an international effort to promote brain health and dementia awareness. Participants pledge $1, $2 or $4 per day at registration and earn their pledge back each day they complete at least one consecutive mile. TinyFest expo returns to Del Mar Fairgrounds

Scripps Cancer Center to host nutrition class for cancer patients

March is National Nutrition Month and Scripps Cancer Center will host a free virtual class on Tuesday, March 18 from noon to 1 p.m. to help cancer patients maintain the best possible nutrition as they go through treatments. Attendees will learn about optimal nutrition and hydration, food flexibility, the importance of adequate protein and calories, and nutritional options to address treatment-related side effects. Research shows that up to 80% of cancer patients in the United States are malnourished while undergoing treatments, which can hinder their outcomes. City to hold youth piano competition

The city of Encinitas will hold the 2025 Youth Piano Concerto Competition with the North Coast Symphony Orchestra. Veterans to climb Mount Everest

Navy veteran Brian O’Malley, who was based in San Diego for 10 years, and his brother-in-law Steve McDaniel, an Air Force veteran and former police officer, are attempting to summit Mount Everest in June to honor military service and first responders. The San Diego nonprofit Voices for Children is looking for volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) and stand up for foster children in need.
