Colleges and universities throughout the country have announced academic honors and degrees earned by students from Rancho Bernardo, Poway and 4S Ranch.

Hayland Jones of the Rancho Bernardo area was recently elected to hip in The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Maryland Global Campus.

Phi Kappa Phi bills itself as the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. hip is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

Cassidy Matwiyoff of the Rancho Bernardo area was among nine University of Alabama students selected for the 2025 Class of Capitol Scholars.

Now in its second year, the Capitol Scholars Program provides outstanding UA System students interested in careers in or around the federal government with an immersive summer internship experience in Washington, D.C.

It is designed for students to increase their understanding of governmental affairs and develop leadership skills. They learn the art of policy research and advocacy, and participate in high-impact professional experiences. Students also have networking opportunities with policy experts, governmental officials and UA System alumni.

Ryan R. Ulrich, a 2020 Poway High alum, graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in communication.

Three students from the Rancho Bernardo area were named to the fall 2024 Dean’s List at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. They are Siena Bacino, Christopher Hammerness and Lauren Littlejohn.

Approximately 53% of the university’s 7,175 undergraduate students qualified for the list by earning a quality GPA of 3.5 or higher and completing a minimum course load of 12 hours.

Allison Chackel, a psychology major from the Rancho Bernardo area, was named to Samford University’s Fall 2024 Dean’s List.

To be honored at the campus in Birmingham, Alabama, students had to earn a minimum GPA of 3.5 while attempting at least 12 credit hours of coursework. The Dean’s List is the highest academic recognition given at the end of each semester.

Nine local students at Southern New Hampshire University have made its Fall 2024 President’s List.

They are Kevin Bristow, Robert Jahelka, Gordon McCloskey and Nicole Tennison of Poway; Faith Foote of ZIP code 92127; and Tyler Connell, Sandra Diaz, Ossie King and Hunter Murphy of ZIP code 92128.

To be honored at the campus in Manchester, New Hampshire, full-time undergraduate students had to earn a minimum GPA of 3.7 and earn at least 12 credits during the term.

Laney Norberg of Poway earned two academic honors from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, at the end of the fall 2024 semester.

Norberg was one of 539 undergraduates named to the President’s List for earning a semester GPA of 3.9 or higher. Norberg was also one of 1,131 students named to the Dean’s List, which is for students who earn a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Two locals were among the approximately 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students to receive degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology during its 267th Commencement exercises in December 2024.

Ashna Sood of 4S Ranch graduated with a Master of Science degree in computer science, with a specialization in machine learning.

Also graduating was Neal Stanton of ZIP code 92128.

Sydney Barnas of the Rancho Bernardo area was named to the Fall 2024 Dean’s List at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. Barnas, a theater arts major, had to earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Mackenzie Rogers of Poway was named to the Fall 2024 Chancellor’s List in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas.

To be honored at the campus in Fayetteville, Arkansas, students had to earn a semester GPA of 4.0 and complete at least 12 credit hours. More than 2,000 students achieved the honor.

Seven area students attending the University of Mississippi earned academic honors during the fall 2024 semester.

Named to the Chancellor’s Honor Roll for earning a semester GPA of 3.75 to 4.0 while completing at least 12 graded hours were:

• Jase Gillespie of the Rancho Bernardo area, who is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in biological science.

• Chase Herring of the Rancho Bernardo area, who is working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in integrated marketing communications.

• Ava Kellerman of Poway, who is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in allied health studies.

• Tanner Kuleto of the Rancho Bernardo area, who is working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.

• Ava Uhlenkott of the Rancho Bernardo area, who is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in allied health studies.

Named to the Dean’s List for earning a semester GPA of 3.50 to 3.74 while completing at least 12 graded hours were:

• Mackenzie Buchan of the Rancho Bernardo area, who is working toward a Bachelor of Business istration in marketing.

• Ava Zamadics of the Rancho Bernardo area, who is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in allied health studies.

Tyler Sanderlin of ZIP code 92127, who graduated from Del Norte High and is majoring in music theatre, was named to the Fall 2024 Dean’s List at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. To be honor, students had to earn a GPA of 3.8 or higher while enrolled in 12 or more graded hours.

Ten locals were among the 14,631 students at The University of Alabama named to either the Fall 2024 President’s List for earning a 4.0 GPA or the Dean’s List for earning a GPA of 3.5 or above.

Named to the President’s List were Ali Byron of ZIP code 92127, Anna Chong of ZIP code 92128, Cassidy Matwiyoff of ZIP code 92127, Jason Tockstein of Poway and Joshua Wernli of Poway.

Named to the Dean’s List were Taylor Farnsworth of ZIP code 92127, Nash Morrill of Poway, Amanda Phillip of ZIP code 92127, Julia Stauffer of ZIP code 92128 and Mackenzie Turgeon ZIP code 92128.

Six locals were among the more than 16,000 University of Maryland Global Campus students named to its Fall 2024 Dean’s List. Those earning the recognition were Hicham Aitlafquih, Jacob Bearden, Ryan Courter, Hayland Jones and Ali Mahin Torabi, all of ZIP code 92128; and Aldwin Salazar of Poway.

To be eligible, students had to complete at least six credits during the term, earn a GPA of at least 3.5 for the term, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5.

Lisa Dinh, a nursing major from the Rancho Bernardo area, was named to the Fall 2024 President’s List at James Madison University. To be honored at the campus in Harrisonburg, Virginia, students had to carry at least 12 graded credit hours and earn a GPA of 3.9 or above.

Ian Palmroos, a computer science and mathematics major from the Rancho Bernardo area, was among more than 1,200 students named to Augustana College’s 2024 Fall Dean’s List. To be honored by the college in Rock Island, Illinois, students had to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Hanna Hafner, a 4S Ranch resident and 2023 Del Norte High graduate, achieved First Honors at the University of San Diego during the Fall 2024 semester. First honors is for students who earn a GPA of 3.65 or higher.

Emi Aguilar of Poway was among the more than 1,800 students that Abilene Christian University named to its Fall 2024 Dean’s Honor Roll. Aguilar is a senior majoring in advertising and public relations.

To be honored at the campus in Abilene, Texas, students had to be ed for 12 or more credit hours and earn a GPA of 3.6 or higher.

Alexandra Dowd, a history and political science major from Poway, was named to the College of Charleston Fall 2024 Dean’s List. To qualify, students had to earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher and complete at least 12 semester hours at the campus in Charleston, South Carolina.

Three students from the Rancho Bernardo area earned academic honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Kian Chakamian and Sahil Samar, both from ZIP code 92127, earned Fall 2024 Faculty Honors because they earned a 4.0 academic average for the semester.

Devam Shrivastava made the Fall 2024 Dean’s List. It is for undergraduate students who earned a 3.0 or higher academic average for the semester.

Two students from the Rancho Bernardo area were among the more than 8,700 students at the University of Iowa to earn academic honors during the 2024 fall semester.

Jenna Crowley of ZIP code 92128 and Keira Skelly of ZIP code 92127 were named to the Dean’s List for earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Crowley was also among the more than 1,000 undergraduate students named to the university’s President’s List for earning a 4.0 GPA while completing 12 or more credit hours during the semester at the campus in Iowa City, Iowa.
