Strong winds could affect Christmas Eve travel on eastern I-8 in San Diego County

Forecasters say gusts could hit 55 mph east of Alpine and will blow hardest on the mountain es.

UPDATED:

Drivers will encounter fierce winds on Christmas Eve along the stretch of eastern Interstate 8 that extends from the Alpine area in San Diego County to Ocotillo in Imperial County, the National Weather Service says.

The winds, which will arrive out of the west, will begin blowing late Tuesday afternoon, gusting to 30 mph in Alpine and Pine Valley and up to 55 mph on the steep, twisty es along the border of San Diego and Imperial counties.

Forecasters also say that sporadic showers late Tuesday could leave I-8 wet all the way from El Cajon to western Imperial County.
