UPDATED:

An excessive heat warning was issued Sunday morning for San Diego County deserts.

The warning by the National Weather Service went into effect at 10 a.m. Sunday and will last until 5 a.m. July 8. On Sunday afternoon, the warning was extended from its original expiration date of 8 p.m. Friday.

Weather officials warn of “dangerously” hot conditions and temperatures of 110 to 119 degrees. They estimate that the heat will peak on Friday.

The National Weather Service advises people to stay out of the sun, drink lots of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms and check in on relatives and neighbors. When outside, people should wear loose-fitting clothes and limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening.

The county and city have lists of cooling centers available.

Temperatures will rise thanks to a large area of high pressure is coming in to the county, said Adam Roser of the National Weather Service in San Diego. Areas east of Interstate 15 are expected to reach the upper 80s and low 90s this week, with further inland areas like Ramona and Julian expected to reach mid- to upper 90s, Roser said. Meanwhile areas toward the coast may only see highs of mid-70s to low-80s.
