Juneteenth charity golf tournament: The San Diego Black Golfer’s Association is holding its fourth annual Juneteenth charity golf tournament. Some of the activities and contests will include hole-in-one, long drive and closest to the pin. There will also be drinks, lunch and dinner available. Roller Rink at Hotel Del Coronado: Open near the main entrance, the Hotel del Coronado is hosting a skating rink this summer. Visitors can also order cocktails and snacks. Tickets provide access to 90 minutes of skating and roller skate rental. 2 to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; noon to 10 p.m. Fridays; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on holidays. Escondido summer reading challenge begins: Escondido readers can sign up for summer reading in the following categories: babies, kids, tweens, teens and adults. PArticipants will complete activities throughout the summer to win prizes. escondido.gov/1180/Summer-Reading
Dance party part of summer programs at library: The Oceanside Public Library is among local libraries offering a summer reading program for all ages through Aug. 3 with prizes and programs. This year’s theme is “Read, Renew, Repeat,” with a focus on conservation and reading as a restorative method of self-improvement and self-care. Entertainment includes a Dance Party with the Microphone Doctors at 1 p.m. June 17 for teens at Joe Balderrama Park, 709 San Diego St. Adults receive a free book for g up and can read three books to receive a free specially made pencil pouch. Adults can monthly book clubs and other special events. Association for Advancement of Science conference: The more than century-old nonprofit American Association for the Advancement of Science – Pacific Division will hold its annual conference from June 17-20 at the University of San Diego Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, 5555 Marian Way. There will be speakers from the natural, physical, social, and health sciences along with engineering and artistic/humanistic areas of science. The speakers come from high schools, community colleges, universities and from industry and government. The conference has a heavy focus on student work. Cygnet Theatre presents From the Page to the Stage!: Watch literary works come to life through music with “mini-shows” put on by musical theater performers. Juneteenth midnight diner: Quiet Storm Roasters & Bakers is holding a midnight dinner in celebration of Juneteenth. Civil rights forum: The California Western School of Law is hosting a civil rights forum in honor of Juneteenth and the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Summer Soulstice Arts & Wellness Festival: Soultry Sisters hosts its third annual Summer Soulstice Arts & Wellness Festival from June 21-23 at New Village Arts and Harding Community Center featuring local artists, creatives, healers and wellness practitioners. This year’s theme is “Reclaiming Ancestral Healing.” The schedule includes creative expression sessions, wellness workshops, social mixers, live performances, dance and sound healing. Black art celebration in Chula Vista: The San Diego Art Directory and the Liberation Through Art are hosting an art show in honor of Juneteenth. This event will highlight the African diaspora, Black artists and ers of Black culture. San Diego Black Arts Festival: Staged readings, solo performances and visual arts can be found at the San Diego Black Arts Festival. This three-day event will showcase Black voices and talent. Summer Nights at the Comic-Con Museum: Starting this weekend, on Fridays leading up to Comic-Con (except July 5), the Comic-Con Museum will be open late for its new Summer Nights event series. Each Friday evening will feature a different theme: cosplay, Dungeons & Dragons, competitive puzzle building, a kid-friendly crafting night and a zombicide game night. San Diego County summer movies: San Diego County’s series of more than 100 summer movie screenings is underway and continues this weekend with showings Friday of “Luca” at Encanto Recreation Center and “Wonka” at Colina Del Sol Park. The movies start 15 minutes after sunset each day. Movies continue on Friday and Saturday evenings through Nov. 1. Museum celebrating Make Music Day: The Museum of Making Music hosts free music-making activities and performances and will open its new, interactive exhibit, “What Good is Music?” on June 21, as part of a worldwide celebration, Make Music Day. The celebration began in as the Fête de la Musique in the early 1980s. Highlights include an Interactive Drum Circle (visitors can borrow a drum or percussion instrument from the museum and trained leaders for a drum circle), Jam on the Lawn and Make & Play: Get Your Shake on with Studio ACE. Musicians of all ages, especially little ones, can make a musical shaker. The museum is at 5790 Armada Drive and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.
