Budget debacle exposes emptiness of the political persona peddled by Gov. Newsom

Just when he seeks to promote himself on the national stage, events in his home state offer unpleasant truths about the would-be president

Re “California has a multibillion-dollar budget deficit. Here’s what you need to know.” (May 10): Well, now, the careful and well-crafted political persona of our governor is starting to show cracks. Gavin Newsom’s lack of ability to plan for our state has left us with a huge gaping hole in the state’s finances. Just as he tries to project himself on the national stage with his smarter-than-you attitude, he is going to go down in flames because of his total mishandling of the state with overregulation, unfettered taxes and excessive spending.

This is a hole that we cannot wish away. As Margaret Thatcher once said, the trouble with socialism is eventually you run out of money. Thanks to Mr. Newsom and his lemmings in the Democratic supermajority, we get to see this firsthand in California.
