Mother’s Day event at Cardiff Farmers Market

The Cardiff Farmer’s Market puts on a Mother’s Day “Make and Take’” event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 4 and May 11, where participants can create a Mother’s Day gift by potting succulents into handcrafted pottery bowls. Participants can choose from a selection of succulents provided by RG Succulents and handmade pottery by STUDIO1212 Ceramics for $25 at the market or save $5 with online pre-order. Encinitas Chamber of Commerce presents Career Collab & Hiring Fair with MiraCosta College

Calling all students and job seekers. In partnership with MiraCosta College, the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce has announced its first-ever Career Collab & Hiring Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the MiraCosta College San Elijo Campus, 3333 Manchester Avenue in Cardiff. This hiring and resource fair is free and open to the public.

The Career Collab & Hiring Fair will be held concurrently with the Cardiff 101 Farmers Market, where attendees can enjoy coffee, lunch and shopping.

Happy Tales reading program at animal shelter

The Rancho Coastal Humane Society holds the Happy Tales reading program from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. on May 18 and June 8 (also at 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on June 8) for children age 6 and older to read aloud to the dogs, cats and rabbits at the animal shelter, 389 Requeza St. Each child must be supervised by a parent. Readers must wear closed-toed, rubber-soled shoes. They can bring their own pillow, blanket or towel to sit on, or the shelter can provide a towel. Participants can bring their own books or borrow a book from the shelter’s education library. The cost is $10 per child. Preregistration is required at rchumanesociety.org. Kids Day at The Flower Fields

The Kids Day at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch is May 5. The event features a stunt show by the BMX Freestyle Team from 1 to 3 p.m. There will also be bubble making, face painting and other activities. The Flower Fields at 5704 Paseo Del Norte are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Mother’s Day. The venue features 55 acres of colorful giant tecolote ranunculus along with family-oriented activities and special events. Additional attractions include a Sweet Pea Maze, a butterfly garden, Santa’s Playground, an American Flag of flowers and a Mediterranean Garden. Tickets are $23; $21 for seniors 60 and older and military; $14 for children age 3–10, and free for children under age 3.; Tickets must be purchased in advance at theflowerfields.com.

San Dieguito Art Guild Mother’s Day Weekend Art, Garden & Studio Tour

The San Dieguito Art Guild, a nonprofit group, is hosting its 27th annual Mother’s Day Weekend Art, Garden & Studio Tour. This is a self-guided, driving tour on Saturday and Sunday, Mother’s Day weekend, May 11 and 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Tickets are good for both days and homes may be re-visited.

This two-day event is the major fundraiser of the year for the San Dieguito Art Guild. Family walk at Carsbad Batiquitos Lagoon

Carsbad Batiquitos Lagoon will hold a family walk on May 18 at 10 a.m. Participants will be revisiting the local bird population now that the winter migrators have departed for points north. There might be some summer visitors visible around the lagoon. Docents will also share their knowledge of the lagoon environment of plants and wildlife. Assistance League Thrift Shop to hold annual Patio Plant Sale

Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito (ALRSD) will hold an outdoor patio sale of plants Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be located just outside the Assistance League Thrift Shop at 1542 Encinitas Blvd., Encinitas. The sale will offer one-of-a-kind garden art, creative pots, succulents, plant cuttings, starter plants, containers, and bird feeders that have been prepared by volunteer to help the organization raise funds for the Assistance League’s philanthropic programs transforming lives and strengthening communities. The plant selection will be first-rate but at bargain prices.

Foster youth artwork on display at the San Diego Watercolor Society

Just in Time for Foster Youth and The San Diego Watercolor Society have ed forces to organize a series of workshops aimed at promoting mental health and healing among transition-age foster youth. Art pieces crafted during these workshops, along with submissions from JIT participants, will be showcased at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s Liberty Station gallery (2825 Dewey Rd, Suite 105, Building 202, San Diego, 92106) throughout May.

‘A conversation on the bipartisan future of climate policy’

“A conversation on the bipartisan future of climate policy” will be held May 16, from 5 p.m.-6:15 p.m., at Malamud Conference Room, Institute of the Americas: 9899 International Lane, La Jolla, 92093.

The discussion will focus on author Benji Backer’s book “The Conservative Environmentalist: Common Sense Solutions for a Sustainable Future.” Backer and David G. Victor will discuss the book’s findings and look at the larger debate around the future of climate policy in the U.S.
