Experience, clearly, was one of the characteristics Poway High was seeking when searching for a new head football coach.

The Titans got just that when they selected Brandon Harris, 53, who had stops in Arizona, Florida and New York before a one-year stint at Canyon Hills High in Tierrasanta.

A wide receiver at Lawndale Leuzinger High, Harris played for the University of Idaho before training camp stops in Denver and Miami in the NFL. He also had a brief career with the Sacramento Surge of the World Football League.

Harris is known for making the extra effort to find college programs that fit his players at any level. He counts 155 former players who have earned scholarships, half of them to Division I programs.

He’s also enjoyed a lot of success, winning three state titles as a head coach and three more as an offensive coordinator.

“Poway High is a storied program, it speaks for itself,” said Harris, who held his first players and parents meetings last week. “There is huge , not just for football, but for all sports. Our first meeting was standing-room-only.

“I know this job will have challenges, they all do, but the school has been really successful. I’m looking forward to it.”

Harris steps in after the departure of Kyle Williams, a nine-year veteran football coach who spent the last three years at Poway High School.
