San Diego stores: Free McDonald’s fries, Carlsbad gets Vuori, Momma Pots opens in El Cajon

Plus, an ethical clothing brand and one way to give back this week as the holidays kick off

UPDATED:

How to get more than 2 pounds of free French fries from McDonald’s

If you missed the Free Fries on Fridays last year — or have been breathlessly waiting for its return — the promotion is back.

From now until Dec. 31, McDonald’s customers can get a free medium French fry with a minimum $1 purchase. Besides the purchase, there’s one more catch: they must be ordered through the McDonald’s mobile app.

Including this week, there are nine fry days left in the year.

Based on the chain’s nutritional data, that adds up to 2,880 calories, 45 grams of protein, almost 400 grams of carbs and more than 1,000 grams in fries — or around 2.25 pounds.

Momma Pots opens new storefront in El Cajon

Who says garage startups are dead?

Blaine Tiongson started a ceramics business called Momma Pots out of her garage in 2017 after a car accident forced a career change. She loved houseplants, so started making porcelain pots. And bowls. And vases.

Since then, she’s sold her wares at Pigment, Terra Bella Nursery and a large number of garden and home decor shops around San Diego County and the U.S.

Next month — and more than 1 million sales later — Momma Pots wholesale and retail boutique will open in downtown El Cajon, at 1990 N. Marshall Ave., Suite 109. The planned date: Nov. 18.

On the retail side, a 4.5-inch pot with saucer, from the Gemstone collection, is priced at $28. A set of of four pots and saucers is $178. She also sells watering cans in colors that pop.

Momma Pots keeps things playful. It describes itself as “Your favorite Pot Dealer” and, in one Instagram post, offers pointers for how to pick the right size pot for planting a puppy.

New in La Jolla: Curated art, textiles, gifts

The owners of Mood Indigo, a new boutique in the Bird Rock neighborhood of La Jolla, have quite the fashion and decor pedigree.

Dave DeMattei and Patrick Wade have launched or transformed brands including J. Crew, Coach, Lucky Brand, West Elm and Williams-Sonoma Home, according to a press release. They were profiled as a long-time creative team and power couple in Architectural Digest.

Their new shop, which shares a name with a jazz standard, brings the duo’s take on new and vintage furniture, art from near and far, as well as lighting, books, candles and tableware.

Three featured artists: printmaker, illustrator and writer Hugo Guinness, New England folk and antique-inspired artist Mary Maguire and local photographer Chad Van Herpe.

Three featured brands: French purveyor of decor goodies Casa Lopez Paris, handmade ceramics by Monets Doggett and Tensira textiles, made in Guinea.

Mood Indigo’s hours are Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Address: 5670 La Jolla Blvd.

The Forum Carlsbad gets Vuori and Outerknown

Encinitas fitness lifestyle brand Vuori opened its first Carlsbad store last week at The Forum Carlsbad.

At the same mall, fashion brand Outerknown, co-founded by surfer Kelly Slater, plans to open its first San Diego County store on Nov. 25.

The company’s mission, per a press release, includes protecting natural resources and “being completely transparent about the process of making apparel.”

Now for sale in menswear: a $298 heathered crew pullover made with recycled cashmere. And for women: a perky denim short sleeve jumpsuit ($198) that incorporates buttons made from “made from tagua palm nuts gathered from the forest floor — a natural alternative to plastic.”

The company has shops in Boston, New York City, Malibu and several other locations. Including Carlsbad, Outerknown is in the process of launching four new stores in the U.S. — three of them in California and one in Georgetown.

Pay it forward: Food drive for veterans kicks off today

From now through the end of the year, watch this space for ways to give back, volunteer or share bounty with people in need.

Today’s opportunity: From Oct. 30 through Nov. 10, drop off non-perishable food items to Feeding San Diego and local veterans of foreign war posts.

“According to Feeding America, in 2020, nearly a quarter (24 percent) of active-duty service experienced food insecurity and 1 in 9 working-age veterans live in food insecure households,” Feeding San Diego said in a press release.

Peanut butter, canned chicken or tuna, ready-to-eat meals and soups are most needed.

Drop-off sites are Feeding San Diego’s website. Or, use Instacart’s Community Carts feature to send donations to Feeding San Diego, with delivery fees waived.
