Poway High School’s junior varsity field hockey team won the 2023 Centurion Classic Field Hockey Tournament on Sept. 30.
The 18 Poway Titans, who are mostly freshmen, won five games against Southern California high school teams to win the tournament.
The Titans won the final game against Huntington Beach High School by a score of 2-0. The match was held at University City High School.
Poway High junior varsity field hockey Coach Makenna Saward said the team has been playing well together even in practices before the season started.
“I was very ecstatic that the girls won the tournament,” Saward said. “They have been growing exponentially since the beginning of August and this was one of our first major groups of wins.”
Kennedy Bizjack, 14, said all five tournament games were challenging in their own way,
“The semi-final game ended in a tie, so we had to do a shoot out, which was nerve-wracking but exciting,” said Bizjack, a freshman.
Bizjack said she was especially pleased because this is her first year playing the sport.
The team will continue to compete locally through Oct. 27, Saward said.
“This is definitely a growing team and we’ve shown they’ve grown as athletes and students and people,” she said.
