SAN DIEGO — A 32-year-old man sleeping in a tent on a downtown sidewalk suffered stab wounds to his chest and a gash to his forehead in an attack early Sunday morning and his assailant ran away, police said.

The man and an unidentified woman were in the tent on 11th Avenue near C Street shortly after 6:10 a.m. when the stabbing occurred. The woman said that she heard a commotion and woke up to see her boyfriend being stabbed, San Diego police Lt. Arturo Swadener told OnScene TV.

She told police she chased the man who attacked her boyfriend away, Swadener said.

Police and paramedics provided medical aid until the man reached the hospital, where he had surgery to stabilize his condition, said Swadener. A detailed description of the suspect wasn’t released.
