A 34-year-old man suffered serious head and leg injuries early Sunday when he crashed into a cinder-block wall in the Fairmount Park neighborhood.

San Diego Police said the man was driving an SUV west on Home Avenue near Spillman Drive at about 2:30 a.m. when he jumped the raised center median, veered across eastbound lanes and struck the wall. He also ran over a fire hydrant, sending water streaming into the air until emergency crews turned off the supply valve.

The man was taken to the hospital with facial fractures and brain bleeding. He also suffered a severe open fracture of his ankle. Authorities said the injuries are considered life-threatening.

San Diego Police traffic units are handling the incident. Anyone with information is asked to traffic division or Crime Stoppers, 888-580-8477.
