UPDATED:

Just in time for the extended heat wave, the Mickey Cafagna Community Center lounge in Poway has been added to the list of Cool Zones in San Diego County.

The Cool Zones program is an established network of sites for older adults, persons with disabilities or anyone looking to escape the extreme heat during the summer. Cool Zones are free, located throughout San Diego County and a way for residents to lower individual utility usage and help conserve energy for the whole community.

The lounge is open for all to use, and has drop-in games and bring-your-own craft sessions as part of the community center’s Older Adult activities (poway.org/olderadults). The Poway Community Library (sdcl.org/poway) is also designated a Cool Zone, in this managed by the County’s Aging & Independence Services in partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric.

In ZIP codes 92127 and 92128 (Rancho Bernardo and nearby communities) there are four designated Cool Zones. They are:

Rancho Bernardo Library, 17110 Bernardo Center Drive. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays and 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays and will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5 (Labor Day).
