The Padres suffered a humiliating 12-4 loss Monday night against one of the worst teams in baseball, but manager Bob Melvin chose not to shake things up for the middle game of the series against the Tigers.
Melvin is using the exact same lineup for Tuesday’s 4:10 p.m. PDT start that he used Monday, with the obvious exception of his starting pitcher, with Mike Clevinger replacing Sean Manaea.
Clevinger makes his first start since the All-Star break against a familiar foe. As a former Cleveland Guardian, he faced the Tigers on multiple occasions with great success.
In 12 appearances against Detroit (11 starts), Clevinger is 8-2 with a 1.65 ERA. He had 72 strikeouts and allowed just two home runs in 65 2/3 innings. However, all of those starts came in 2019 or earlier.
Clevinger is 2-3 with a 3.50 ERA this season for the Padres. He is pitching for the first time since July 17, when he allowed only one run in six innings against Arizona.
Here is the lineup Clevinger will face:
The Padres will be facing Garrett Hill, a rookie making just his fourth career start. Hill was a 26th-round draft choice out of San Diego State in 2018. He made his major league debut July 4 and beat Cleveland, but he lost his two most recent starts against the White Sox and A’s.
Before the game, the Padres announced left-hander MacKenzie Gore, who left Monday’s game with soreness in his pitching elbow, was placed on the 15-day injured list. He was replaced on the active roster by right-hander Dinelson Lamet, who is 0-1 this season with a 10.13 ERA in 11 games (10 2/3 innings). In his last outing for the Padres (his only one for them since early May), Lamet gave up three runs and four hits in 2 1/3 innings July 10 against San Francisco. Lamet turned 30 last week.
