UPDATED:

The Padres surprised the baseball world Thursday evening with news that Bob Melvin, who led the Oakland A’s to six postseason appearances in the past 10 years, would be taking over as their manager. (Those six appearances match the number made by the Padres in their 53-season history.)

Melvin, who turned 60 on Thursday, is a three-time Manager of the Year who also guided Seattle and Arizona before going to Oakland.

What does his impending hiring (the Padres have not announced the move officially) mean to the Padres? Union-Tribune beat writer Kevin Acee and sports editor Jay Posner discussed it Friday on a special edition of their Hot Lava podcast.
