SAN DIEGO — County officials are setting out again to honor more than a dozen young residents in San Diego who are excelling in school, giving back to their community, or dedicating their time to help others — sometimes while overcoming hardship.

The annual “25 Most Remarkable Teens” program is in its third year. The program recognizes young San Diegans’ accomplishments in more than two dozen categories, including activism, civic involvement, entrepreneurship, personal determination, and social conscience.

The San Diego County Public Defender’s Office is accepting nominations through September 21. Nominees should be 13 to 19 years old and live in San Diego County.

“Celebrating the contributions of young people is especially meaningful this year as young people are returning to the classroom after 18 months of remote learning,” Public Defender Randy Mize in a statement Tuesday. “We are confident there are many untold stories of youth demonstrating courage, spirit and unparalleled tenacity and we hope to hear some of those stories in the nominations we receive for the Most Remarkable Teens 2021.”

Community are encouraged to nominate young residents for the program who are motivated, committed to their community, inspiring in their talents and those who have shown the courage to confront or overcome adversity, officials said.

There are 25 categories, but other categories could be considered. Some categories include: campus leadership, fashion design, hobbies, climate change, public health, public speaking, writing, invention, courage to overcome adversity and more.

The Public Defender Youth Council, a group made up of high school students, will select the winners.

The winners will be honored at a ceremony on Nov. 10 at the San Diego Public Central Library. Last year’s celebration was canceled because of the pandemic, but county staff hand-delivered glass trophies and personalized yard signs to 25 teens.

Community can nominate candidates online by filling out a form on the Public Defender’s website, and emailing it to [email protected] or mailing it to Connie Howard at San Diego County Public Defender Youth Council, 451 A St., Suite 1480, San Diego, CA 92101.
