The Padres were trailing the Washington Nationals 8-0 in the top of the fourth inning Thursday night when Mark Grant made a promise.
“Padres come back and win this one, I’m walking from Alpine to Petco,” Grant said on the Bally Sports San Diego telecast.
Grant made a similar promise during Wednesday’s game against the Nationals, but the Padres lost 15-5.
“I’m with you again tonight,” broadcast partner Don Orsillo said.
“Alright, thank you,” Grant said. “Scan, you in?”
“Of course. Absolutely I’m in,” analyst Bob Scanlan said.
Said Grant: “I am so hoping for a Padre comeback. I want blisters and corns and bad ankles and blown-out knees and quads, hip replacement.”
As you might have heard, the Padres rallied for a 9-8 victory, keyed by a fourth-inning grand slam from relief pitcher Daniel Camarena in only his second major league at-bat.
After the game, Grant said on Twitter he would make the 29-mile trek from Caffe Adesso — the coffee stand in Alpine owned by the family of Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove — to Petco Park and he would do it to raise money for Rady Children’s Hospital.
“I’m gonna walk and I’m gonna love it!” he said in another tweet.
