EL CAJON — Only Helix can lose the best player in the county and look even stronger afterward.

But that appeared to be the case on Friday night as the top-ranked Highlanders crushed No. 7 Grossmont 54-14 in front of a packed house at Grossmont.

Elelyon Noa, who is fifth in section career rushing with 5,835 yards, underwent surgery on his left foot earlier in the day and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Helix (7-1, 3-0) piled up 643 total yards and got huge production from a host of players to beat Grossmont (6-2, 2-1) for the 24th straight time in the battle for the Campbell Musket.

Kamryn Brown, who became the starting QB two weeks before the season started, was 9 of 16 for 213 yards and two TDs.

Delshawn Traylor, playing running back now, rushed for 170 yards on 12 carries, including TDs of 62 and 6 yards to opening the scoring.

Keionte Scott, who transferred to Helix from Las Vegas two weeks before the season, had a 51-yard TD on a spectacular play to end the first half, then an interception to set up another score, and then a 70-yard TD reception.

Sophomore tailback Christian Washington added 136 rushing yards and two TDs on 10 carries.

“Noa is hard to replace obviously,” Helix coach Robbie Owens said. “But we have a great mixture of guys doing their best right now. They all played really well.

“To me, Keionte is the most underrated player in the county. He’s why we are what we are right now.”

Helix dominated the first half, gaining 416 total yards to Grossmont’s 151 and taking a 34-7 lead into intermission.

The highlight play of the game/season came on the final snap of the first half. With 0:06 left, Brown scrambled for a 10-yard gain, lateraled to Traylor, who raced around before lateraling back to Brown, who raced around before ing backward to Scott, who found a seam and raced down the left sideline for a 51-yard TD play.

At the half, Traylor had 131 rushing yards and two TDs, Washington 119 and a score, Scott 51 yards and Brown was 8-of-12 ing for 143 yards.

Jaime Odom was 18-of-36 ing for 213 yards and a TD for Grossmont, which hasn’t beaten Helix since 1991 when current coach Tom Karlo was the Foothillers’ quarterback.
