
Despite the early 8 a.m. PDT start time, San Diego had the highest Nielsen TV rating among major markets for Sunday’s World Cup final between and Croatia, according to Fox Sports.
The rating in San Diego was 13.8, with a 33 share. That means one-third of the people watching TV from 7:45 a.m. until 10 a.m. Sunday were watching the game on Fox. It does not include people watching on Telemundo or away from home. Each rating point is equivalent to 10,028 households in San Diego County.
TweetWashington, D.C. was second (13.6), followed by San Francisco (13.0), New York (12.5) and Los Angeles (11.2). There were no other West Coast markets in the top 10.
For the entire World Cup tournament, which lasted just over a month, Washington had the highest average rating (3.8), followed by San Francisco (3.3), Miami (3.2), Austin (3.2) and San Diego in a tie for fifth with New York (3.1).
The national overnight (or preliminary) average rating for Sunday’s final was 8.3, down 14 percent from a 9.7 rating for the 2014 final between and Argentina. The 2014 final kicked off four hours later, at noon PDT. San Diego’s rating in 2014 was 16.3 — about 15 percent higher than Sunday.
