Cutting another tie to San Diego, the Chargers on Monday announced that Josh Lewin, their radio voice for the last 12 seasons, is being replaced.
The new voice for the games, which will be heard on KFI AM-640, is Matt “Money” Smith, a fixture on Los Angeles sports radio. Smith will work with Lewin’s partner last year, former Chargers center Nick Hardwick, who also hosts a morning show on San Diego’s XTRA 1360-AM.
In a tweet, Lewin said: “The @Chargers have decided they want a fulltime LA announcer so a wonderful run ends today. Will happily continue w/Mets and UCLA and will cherish my memories of serving Chargers fans these last 12yrs. Thank you for everything Bolts fans, you’re the best!”
Smith’s play-by-play experience includes the last seven years on Com Media Network’s coverage of the NFL and pro and college basketball. He also has done TV play-by-play for the Pac-12 Network and Fox.
In their news release — which did not include any mention of Lewin — the Chargers also said their three locally produced exhibition game telecasts will feature Spero Dedes and Dan Fouts as the announcers. Those games will be seen on the ABC in Los Angeles. It’s also expected that a San Diego TV station will carry the games. The other exhibition game, against the Rams, is scheduled for a national broadcast on CBS.
