Rabbits are returning to the Gaslamp this summer – Dusty Rabbits, that is. As part of the Gaslamp’s 150th Anniversary, the Gaslamp Quarter Association is challenging downtown’s top mixologists to create their version of a cocktail called the “Dusty Rabbit” and compete to see whose concoction will be named the signature cocktail of the anniversary celebrations.
Twenty local bars, clubs and restaurants have created their unique take on the “Dusty Rabbit.” Flavors range from sweet to spicy to smoky and feature all sorts of different ingredients.
With so many options, how will the winner be chosen?
That’s where Gaslamp locals and visitors come in. When you order a Dusty Rabbit at one of the participating establishments, take a picture of your cocktail and post it on Instagram tagging the venue and @gaslampquarter and using the hashtags #DustyRabbit and #Gaslamp150. You can also email your photo and the information to [email protected].
The five locations with the most engagement will serve their cocktails at the 150th Anniversary Birthday Party, hosted by the Gaslamp Quarter Association. Guests at the party will then vote on their favorite Dusty Rabbit.
Oh, and by sharing your photos on Instagram (or emailing them), you’ll be entered to win a special Gaslamp Quarter 150th Anniversary prize package, including:
- One-night stay at Hard Rock Hotel San Diego
- Gift cards for Gaslamp Quarter businesses
- Parking vouchers
Of course, you must be over 21 to try the Dusty Rabbits and enter the giveaway.
What’s with the name “Dusty Rabbit”? Like some of the other events and promotions planned for the 150th anniversary, it’s a nod to the Gaslamp’s past as a haven for rabbits. Before Alonzo Horton started settling the area, it was known as “Rabbitville.”
