KFMB Channel 8 was still the choice in February for more evening news viewers in San Diego County, but the CBS couldn’t make that claim at 11 p.m.
It was close, literally a difference of about a thousand homes (in a county of more than 1 million homes) a night, but KGTV Channel 10 had the county’s highest average rating for the 11 p.m. weeknight broadcasts during the “sweeps” ratings period that ended Wednesday, according to preliminary Nielsen household numbers.
The ABC averaged a 3.5 rating and 8.6 share over the 20-night period, compared with a 3.4 rating and 8.5 share for Channel 8. The NBC , KNSD Channel 7/39, was third at
2.5/6, followed by independent KUSI Channel 9/51 at 1.9/5.
Channel 8 did win the local newscasts at 5 and 6:30 p.m., while Channel 7/39 triumphed at 6. However, national broadcasts on NBC (at 5:30) and CBS (at 6) actually had more viewers in those 30 minutes than any local show.
In many instances the time periods were close, almost ridiculously so. For example, at 4:30 a.m. three of the four local newscasts averaged a 0.7 rating and the fourth was at 0.6. Then, at 5 a.m., when all six major local stations have news, all but one averaged a rating between 1.0 and 1.2.
To be fair, though, someone has to be declared the winner, and KSWB Channel 5/69 had the 1.2 rating from 5 to 6 a.m., and also triumphed from 6 to 7 a.m. and again from 7 to 9 a.m., when it edged the national shows on NBC, CBS and ABC.
The results were familiar at 10 p.m., where KUSI held onto the top spot.
One interesting national note: “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” in its first sweeps period since moving to 11:35 p.m., beat Jay Leno and David Letterman in San Diego. The Kimmel show averaged a 2.1 rating, compared with 1.8 for Leno and 1.6 for Letterman.
Each rating point equates to 10,751 homes in San Diego County.
