The Chargers signed kicker Nick Novak on Friday, after Nate Kaeding cut practice short because of a groin injury, a source said.
Novak was on the team’s flight to Kansas City for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs.
The Chargers listed Kaeding (groin) as questionable on their injury report.
Kaeding, who’d gone 7-for-7 on field goals, hadn’t been on an injury report this season.
“He was sore when he started kicking today, and wasn’t able to continue,” coach Norv Turner said.
Novak kicked well for the Chargers in 2011 after replacing Kaeding, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the season opener. Novak made 27 of 34 field goals and was 73 of 74 on PATs. He had a career-high five fields goals in the win at Denver, set a Charger record by making 11 kicks from 40 yards or longer and hit a career-long 53-yarder.
In a career that’s also placed him with the Redskins, Cardinals and Chiefs, Novak has made 72 percent of his field goals and 99 percent of his PATs.
